UK appoints British-Nigerian, Florence Eshalomi as trade envoy

Image
The UK government has appointed Helen Grant MP, a British-Nigerian politician, as the UK Trade Envoy to Nigeria. Grant's role will involve supporting the UK Government's trade and investment priorities in Nigeria through high-level engagement with Nigerian Ministers and businesses. However, I also found information on Florence Eshalomi, a British Labour politician of Nigerian descent, who serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Vauxhall and the Shadow Minister for Transport.  Eshalomi has been an active advocate for social justice, equality, and community development, and has worked tirelessly to represent the interests of her constituents in Parliament. With a strong passion for public service, she has been instrumental in championing various causes, including education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. As a good and proud representative of the Nigerian diaspora, Eshalomi continues to inspire and uplift her community, while striving to create and innovate a more in...

Obasa's US Trip Ends in Impeachment

Image
Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, was impeached on January 13, 2025, amidst allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The allegations against him included financial mismanagement, with reports of billions of naira being spent on official cars and utility buses that were never delivered. Additionally, there were claims of authoritarian leadership and lack of accountability, with the Finance Management Committee not having met officially since the 10th Assembly was inaugurated. Obasa's impeachment was reportedly linked to his ambitions for the governorship seat of Lagos, with some sources suggesting that he was planning to run for the position in 2027. His impeachment was also seen as a move to restore trust in the system and ensure accountability in the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa's impeachment came after he served as Speaker for nearly a decade, from June 2015 to January 2025. He was succeeded by Mojisola Meranda, who ...

Nnamdi Kanu sues police spokesman for defamation, demands 20 billion naira damages

Image
Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken a significant step in seeking justice by filing a defamation suit. However, contrary to initial reports, the suit isn't targeted at the police spokesman. Instead, Kanu is suing Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, for terrorism defamation.  This move is likely aimed at addressing the alleged false accusations and misinformation spread about Kanu and IPOB's activities. As the leader of IPOB, Kanu has been a vocal advocate for the rights and freedom of the Igbo people, and this lawsuit may be seen as a way to protect his reputation and that of his organization. Kanu is demanding a staggering N100 billion in damages, a significantly higher amount than the initially mentioned N20 billion. This substantial claim is part of a defamation lawsuit filed against Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhara.  The lawsuit, submitted to the High Court of Enstate, see...

Mercy Chinwo moved to tears, accuses ex-manager of sponsoring false news about son, Nathaniel Bassey

Image
Mercy Chinwo has made some grave and disturbing accusations against her ex-manager, alleging that they orchestrated a vicious smear campaign by sponsoring false and damaging news about her and Nathaniel Bassey, a renowned fellow gospel artist. Apparently, the scurrilous rumors falsely and maliciously accused Bassey of fathering Chinwo's child, causing significant emotional distress and reputational damage to all parties involved. Bassey has taken swift and decisive action, petitioning the Inspector-General of Police to launch a thorough investigation and prosecute those responsible for the false and defamatory accusations. The petition urges the authorities to take immediate action against four individuals, accusing them of criminal defamation and cyberstalking. By taking this bold step, Bassey aims to clear his name, restore his reputation, and bring the perpetrators to justice. The petition urges action against four individuals for criminal defamation and cyberstalking. This wh...

Nurses threaten to withdraw services in Katsina over security concerns

Image
Nurses in Katsina are threatening to withdraw their services due to escalating security concerns in the state. This alarming development has sparked widespread apprehension among patients, hospital administrators, and the general public. Unfortunately, I couldn't find specific details on this situation, but it's worth noting that Katsina has been investing heavily in addressing its security challenges. In recent months, the state government has intensified efforts to combat insecurity, recognizing the critical need to protect citizens, including healthcare workers. In the last six months alone, the state government has spent over N10 billion to tackle insecurity, with a significant portion (over N7 billion) allocated to acquiring vehicles, communication equipment, and other essential resources for security agencies. To mitigate this crisis, the Katsina State Government must engage in immediate dialogue with the nurses' union to address their concerns and develop effective s...

Lookman out of Atalanta’s Champions League clash at Barcelona with knee injury

Image
Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian star forward, will miss Atalanta's crucial Champions League clash against Barcelona due to a knee injury sustained during training. This is a significant blow to Atalanta's hopes of securing direct qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League. Lookman has been a vital cog in Atalanta's machinery this season, boasting an impressive tally of 14 goals and seven assists from 27 games across all competitions. His pace, skill, and clinical finishing have made him a nightmare for opposing defenders, and his creative vision has consistently unlocked opportunities for his teammates. His impending absence will be sorely felt, particularly given Atalanta's fragile grip on second place in Group H, where they cling to a slender one-point advantage over Bayer Leverkusen. The extent of Lookman's injury is still unclear, but reports suggest he could be sidelined for up to a month. This would not only impact Atalanta's Champions League camp...

Al Hilal, Neymar reach agreement to end contract

Image
Neymar's time at Al Hilal has come to an end, with the Saudi Pro League club announcing that they've reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. This move paves the way for Neymar's highly anticipated return to his boyhood club, Santos, in Brazil. Neymar's tenure at Al Hilal was marred by a series of setbacks, most notably a severe ACL injury that sidelined him for an extended period. As a result, he was limited to just seven appearances for the club, managing to score only a single goal. Nevertheless, Neymar's reputation as a football superstar endures, bolstered by his illustrious stints at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, where he consistently showcased his exceptional skills. As for what's next, reports suggest that Neymar will sign a six-month contract with Santos, with the option to extend for another year. The move would see Neymar return to the club where he began his professional career, and where he won numerous titles, including the Copa...

The circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear, but the EFCC has confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
